Sunshine Prevention Center programs are open to all children/teens however we do tend to target children at-risk and vulnerable families. The programs utilize various forms of the arts (puppets, fine arts, theater, dance, etc.) and other interactive ways (team building, interactive workshops, special guests, field trips) to reinforce the prevention-focused topics. These programs all provide the education and support that aims to show alternatives to alcohol, drugs and violence, while aiming to build self-esteem, enhance social skills and enrich creative expression. Testimonies From Interns:

Meghan went to the University of South Carolina college of social work. She graduated with my BSW in May 2023, and is currently getting her Masters in social work at USC. Meghan interned for the Summer Prevention Program 2022.

Meghan learned how impactful positive relationships are for children. She learned how to lead a group of children, use a strengths-based approach to help them overcome their challenges, and use fun and creative ways to build their self-image and teach them positive social skills.

Meghan feels that interning at Sunshine Prevention Center helped her solidify what she wanted to do as her career. After spending time with the kids all summer, she knew that she was meant to work in a field with children, which led her to apply for her masters in social work with a specialization in children, youth, and families.

Meghan’s favorite part about interning at Sunshine was the opportunity to watch the kids she spent all summer with grow. For example, she saw one child completely flourish while at Sunshine. He started the program as a very shy, timid kid that kept to himself, but a few weeks in he was talkative, leading games of tag, and making friends. Meghan felt it was heartwarming to see that the work we were doing was making a difference in his life. And his caseworker even shared with the team that she noticed a major improvement in him.

___________

Carter was enrolled in Stony Brook University, Bachelor of Arts: Psychology program with Sociology Concentration when he interned for Sunshine’s Summer Prevention Program 2023. Carter learned his patience threshold and how to positively interact with a younger generation. The experience made Carter more aware of what age range he would be comfortable working with. Carter liked seeing the kids progressively become more themselves and comfortable around their peers and the counselors during his time interning. Carter learned the most from them and will keep them with him always.
