A Positive Alternative for High Risk Youth

On

To work intensely with high-risk youth (and their families) who have been or are in danger of being suspended  from school, to provide them with educational and prevention-focused services in a variety of areas that will prepare them to go back to school with new tools and skills to help them succeed academically & socially.  The program aims to teach these youth to take responsibility for their own actions. and empower them to make better choices for their future.

Violence Prevention (Anger Management, Decision Making, etc)
Peace Making – Includes conflict resolution, peer mediations, opportunities to resolve problems and conflicts in a peaceful manner
Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Education
Community Service Projects - Enhancing social responsibility and leadership skills
Educational field trips that provide awareness opportunities that strive to assist students in making healthier choices for their future (probation, courts, jail, treatment facilities)
Group, Individual, & Family Support sessions - Assisting youth & their families in personal growth and the opportunity to face and work on a variety of issues
Parent Education and Support
Community to School Liaisons – Working closely with the home district, family, and student to enhance success

An Alternative Learning Environment to home tutoring for high risk youth

Support for schools by taking your most challenging youth and providing them with a variety of intervention and prevention services, as well as academic services

A positive environment that assists high risk youth in avoiding negative influences which may affect their behavior

Opportunities to reinforce positive behaviors in high risk youth in order to reduce or extinguish their negative behaviors

A Structured environment that emphasizes Respect and Responsibility

Close Supervision for all students

Productive activities during the hours of suspension

Tutoring and Academic Support supervised by NYS Certified Teachers

A Support Component (Individual and Group Support)

The opportunity for additional services (afterschool, summer, evenings)

A Parent Education Component

 

Financial Assistance - Contracting w/Sunshine per seat

To assign a School to Community Liaison who will work directly with Sunshine and the student/family

 To provide transportation for the student

To provide academic books/materials in order that the student can maintain progress at a comparable rate to those in regular class (Sunshine must receive a copy of the student’s schedule)

To ensure that Sunshine is aware of any academic, social, behavioral issues

.

· To reduce the occurrence of suspensions in schools

· To decrease negative behaviors in high risk youth

· To increase positive social skills in high risk youth

· To reduce the drop out rate in individual schools

· To keep these youth out of the Justice System
